Research Interests

Paul LaStayo is a researcher, teacher and clinician with interests in both skeletal muscle adaptations and hand/upper extremity impairments and functional limitations. Dr LaStayo and his closest collaborators, on the University of Utah Campus (Robin L. Marcus, PT, PhD, OCS and Lee Dibble, PT, PhD, ATC ) and outside of Utah, continue to be fascinated by both the mechanistic and applied outcomes resulting from the various demands being placed on locomotor muscles and the upper extremity.

An integrative emphasis permeates his work, with close associations in biology, orthopedics, exercise/biomechanical sciences and mechanical engineering facilitating this approach. The structural, functional, and performance changes following eccentric (negative) muscular work have been a focused area of inquiry, as have the wrist and shoulder. Dr LaStayo is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Hand Therapy and former Associate Editor of the Journal of Orthopedic and Sport Physical Therapy .
