Below is a listing of awards & recognition received by students, staff, and faculty at The University of Utah - Division of Physical Therapy over the past 18 months:

October, 2006

Julie Fritz, PT, PhD was awarded the Erhard Outstanding Platform Presentation Award at the recent American Academy of Manual Physical Therapists in Charlotte NC. This is the one major yearly award of its kind in that organization.

June, 2006

Scott Ward, PT, PhD, was elected President of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) during PT 2006: The Annual Conference and Exposition of the American Physical Therapy Association . 

May, 2006

Susan Redmond (Class of 1995) was recognized in The Salt Lake Tribune for her work in the Jordan School District as a physical therapist.

April, 2006

Luke Brown was selected as a John and Linda Dunn Scholar in the College of Health.

March, 2006

Dr. Paul LaStayo is the principal investigator on two projects testing the impact of Resistance Exercise via Negative Eccentric Work (RENEW) funded by the National Cancer Institute (2006-08) and the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation (2006-2007).  The former, in conjunction with the College of Nursing, is a study of elderly cancer survivor participants and the latter project is in collaboration with Drs. Ed Gappmeier and Heather Hayes. The ultimate goal of these projects is to improve muscle size, strength and performance in the respective patient populations.

Dr. Gina Musolino received seed money to support departments and programs as they develop and institutionalize service-learning and civic engagement from the Bennion Center's Civically-Engaged Scholars Committee

Steven R. Verhaaren, PT, OCS (Class of 1994) & Michael Gene Jacketta, PT, OCS (Class of 1998) successfully attained their Orthopaedic Certified Specialist credentials

September, 2005

Brian Harward (Class of 2008) completed the "Wasatch 100 Mile Endurance Run"

August, 2005

Drs. Paul LaStayo, Lee Dibble are co-investigators on a 2005-06 research grant from the American Parkinson Disease Association awarded to principle investigator Dr. Stacy Morris Bamberg (of the Dept of Mechanical Engineering). Dr. Bamberg and John Droge, MS is the PhD student (and SMERF engineer) heading up this project. The project is titiled "Effects of Strength Training on Balance in the Elderly with Parkinson's Disease Using an In-shoe Mobile Gait Device"

K. Bo Foreman, PT, PhD - Recieved the "Utah System of Higher Education Exemplary Faculty Use of Technology Award"

Julie M. Fritz, PT, PhD, ATC - Received funding through the Incentive Seed Grant Program for the project "Efficacy of Epidural Steroid Injection With or Without Physical Therapy for Patients with Low Back Pain and Sciatica Due to Intervertebral Disc Herniation"

Odessa Adison, DPT - College of Health finalist for The University of Utah Health Sciences Center "Elizabeth Furhiman Gardner Prize"

Gina Maria Musolino, PT, MSEd, EdD - Awarded the Utah System of Higher Education, State Board of Regents, Utah Electronic College Consortium, Curriculum Development Grant, 2005-2006

Gina Maria Musolino, PT, MSEd, EdD - Awarded the Lowell Bennion Community Service Center, Civically-Engaged Scholars Service Learning Inititative Grant

Lee Dibble PhD, PT, ATC - Awarded the The "2005 Golden Synapse Award" for the article titled Maximal Speed Gait Initiation Of Healthy Elderly Individuals And Person's With Parkinson's Disease" which was authored by Lee Dibble PhD, PT, ATC, Diane Nicholson PhD PT, NCS, Barry Shultz PhD, Bruce A. MacWilliams PhD, Robin L. Marcus PhD PT, OCS and Carolee Moncur PhD PT. The article was published in the March 2004 issue (Volume 28, number 1) pp 2-11. The award recognizes the most outstanding article published each year. The decision is made by Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy Reviewers and is based on the article's conceptualization, execution, presentation and contribution to physical therapy practice. Dr. Dibble accepted a plaque at the Neurology Section's Business Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Reuben T. Jessop, DPT and Chris Horowicz, DPT, were awarded the entry level student research award by the Neurology Section of the American Physical Therapy Association at the national mid-winter research meeting in New Orleans, LA. Their research project, completed with Dr. Lee Dibble as their advisor, was titled Motor Learning in Parkinson Disease: Refinement of Movement Velocity and Endpoint Excursion in a Limits of Stability Balance Task.

Gina Maria Musolino, PT, MSEd, EdD - Awarded The Feitelberg Journal Founder's Award, APTA Education Section, Journal of Physical Therapy Education, Editorial Advisory Board, award for excellence in manuscript preparation, "Enhancing Diversity through Mentorship: The Nurturing Potential of Service Learning" JOPTE, Vol. 18, Spring 2004
