The Therapeutic Recreation option area involves the provision of leisure services for individuals with disabilities within community and clinical settings. These agencies provide students with applied experiences, and include state hospitals, training schools, rehabilitation centers, psychiatric facilities, general hospitals, residential programs, skilled and intermediate care facilities, prisons, drug and alcohol centers, community mental health centers and community bases recreation programs. Several of the agencies providing students with applied experiences in the Salt Lake Valley include clinical settings [University of Utah Neuropsychiatric Institute, Wasatch Canyons Hospital, and Health South] and community settings [YWCA, S'PLORE, Camp Kostopulos, and Columbus Community Center].
 Professionals in the field of therapeutic recreation design programs and services to bring about positive change and promote the health and development of individuals with disabilities. Therapeutic recreation professionals provide several types of services, including (1) therapy, (2) leisure education, and (3) recreation participation opportunities for individuals with disabilities. In order to provide these services, the therapeutic recreation professional must gain knowledge and insight into the influence a disability may have on an individual's leisure behavior, the effectiveness of recreation interventions, developmental processes, counseling skills, therapeutic approaches, and activity adaptation.
Licensing is required in the state of Utah in order to practice Therapeutic Recreation. This curriculum prepares the student for the licensing process.
