National Outdoor Leadership School and the U

Over twenty five years ago the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism at the University of Utah recognized the unparalleled wilderness skills and leadership education offered through the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS).

Through our contracting of courses with NOLS, students have earned University of Utah credit in topics including risk assessment, risk management, and decision-making; group leadership techniques; and expedition planning.

These courses are designed to help people develop and practice the skills they need to live, travel, and recreate in the outdoors.

Every NOLS course is approved for credit and many college-age students take advantage of our partnership.

More than 400 colleges and universities nationwide have accepted NOLS/University of Utah credit.

In addition, PRT and NOLS work collaboratively on a variety of research topics relevant to wilderness and adventure education.  Current topics include program design and quality, instructional strategies and impacts, course outcomes, and post program retention and application (transfer) of learning.
