Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism

Commercial Recreation

The commercial recreation emphasis focuses on entrepreneurial endeavors and small business management within the context of hospitality, tourism, or local commercial recreation. Students in the Commercial Recreation Emphasis take a blend of business, marketing and management courses useful in a recreation context.

Commercial Recreation is a medium for the provision of recreation products and services. Since commercial recreation is based primarily on the customer paying a fee, commercial enterprises are able to focus on specific target markets that will allow for long-term profitability. Employment options range from independent guides and tour operator to retail specialty stores (e.g., skiing, scuba diving) to club, resort, and restaurant ownership. Graduates commonly work for small commercial operations in management positions, and a number of our students have started their own businesses. If you are planning to work in the "business" of recreation, this option may be for you.
