About Therapeutic Recreation
Therapeutic Recreation also referred to as Recreational Therapy is a health and human service profession that promotes increased functioning, health and well-being and greater quality of life for individuals with illness and disability. Individual and group counseling techniques are implemented with prescribed play, recreation and activity-based interventions as a part of the systematic therapeutic recreation process, which guides the accomplishment of specific evidence-based outcomes.
Careers
Qualified professionals with both academic and applied training provide therapeutic recreation. In the State of Utah professionals must be licensed by the Department of Occupational Licensing. National certification by the National Council of Therapeutic Recreation Certification is required for most professional positions across the United States Therapeutic Recreation is a very diverse profession and offers a variety of career opportunities in:
• centers for physical medicine and rehabilitation
• psychiatric institutions
• substance abuse treatment centers
• correctional facilities
• schools
• public park and recreation departments
• community-based non-profit agencies
