Available Scholarships

Scholarships offered by the Division of Occupational Therapy are only awarded to students currently enrolled in the occupational therapy graduate curriculum.  Students may apply for more than one scholarship but will be eligible to receive only one scholarship per year. 

When you submit your application, please be clear as to which scholarship(s) you are applying for.  Students cannot receive a scholarship they have previously received.

Joseph Broadbent Scholarship

This scholarship was set up by Joseph Ray and Lorna S. Broadbent in honor of their son, Joseph Broadbent, who was injured in a most serious truck accident.  During his stay at University Hospital he overcame numerous obstacles involving much therapy to return to his home and work. 

This scholarship is to be awarded to a student who can be classified as a minority by race or by gender.  Occupational therapy is primarily a female dominated profession.  By virtue of this fact, males would be considered a minority in the profession—making up approximately 15% of the registered therapists. 

Preference for the award of this scholarship would first be given to a student who is in the category of a minority group as recognized by the American Association of Medical Colleges as under represented in health professions:  African-Americans, American Indians, Mainland Puerto Ricans, Mexican-Americans and Native Hawaiians and then by the field of occupational therapy. 

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA during semesters in the OT program of 3.0 or GPA of 3.0 in undergraduate work if first year student, demonstrate financial need and show participation in professional occupational therapy organizations. 

The G. Mitchell Morris Scholarship

This scholarship was the first scholarship in the Division of Occupational Therapy.  Mrs. Morris and her husband are very interested in assisting students in their educational endeavors and are committed to the advancement of healthcare. 

This scholarship is to be awarded to a student who has demonstrated their involvement in volunteer and service oriented activities which benefit the larger community. 

Preference will be given to applicants who have provided volunteer service in areas of emerging practice related to occupational therapy.  Applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 during semesters in the OT program, demonstrate financial need and show involvement in projects or activities that are volunteer and service oriented.  Volunteer service does not include work done for academic credit or occupational therapy fieldwork experiences. 

The Ronald L. and Dona P. Call

This scholarship is to be awarded to a first year student who can demonstrate a strong commitment to their education as an occupational therapist and who is actively involved in the organizations of the profession.  Applicants must have a cumulative GPA during undergraduate work prior to entering the program of 3.5.  They must also demonstrate a financial need.

The Gordon and Betty Browning Scholarship

This scholarship was set up in by the estate of Gordon & Betty Browning for students at the University of Utah health science areas of discipline including the College of Health and Division of Occupational Therapy. 

This scholarship will be awarded to a second or third year occupational therapy student for academic excellence and commitment to the profession of occupational therapy. 

Applicants must have a cumulative GPA during semesters in the OT program of 3.75, demonstrate financial need and participate in professional occupational therapy organizations.

Eugene D. And Ann O. Wright Family Scholarship

This scholarship was set up by the family of Eugene D. and Ann O. Wright to benefit occupational therapy students who will be progressive in their chosen career as an occupational therapist. 

This scholarship will be awarded for academic excellence and commitment to the creative practice of occupational therapy.  Applicants must be a non-traditional student (age 25 or above) with a minimum GPA of 3.5. 

Applicants must demonstrate commitment to Occupational Therapy through community volunteer involvement and/or commitment to creative occupational therapy involvement.  Priority will be give to those students with a financial need.

The Don B. Hutchison Scholarship

This is a new scholarship for the Division of Occupational Therapy.  Selection criteria have not yet been determined.
