How to Apply
There are no specific prerequisites except a four year undergraduate bachelor's degree for beginning a master¿s degree (MS.) in our department. A complete description of the core professional skills training courses required for this degree is available in these MS Guidelines.
We review MS applicant files every Wednesday after your application to the Graduate School is completed and the completed file is sent to our department. You can then begin course work the next semester once notified of acceptance.
The Application Process Requirements
- Application: You must make an application to attend the University of Utah Graduate School which you can do on-line at www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/ .
- Transcripts: The graduate school will also need an official copy of your academic transcripts. Your GPA should be at a 3.0 for a master¿s degree on a 4.0 scale.
- Application Letter: A comprehensive statement of approximately 500 words outlining the applicant's professional goals, work experience and motivation for seeking a graduate degree and proposed area of concentration. It is highly recommended that the student review the curriculum tracks and faculty areas of expertise and include a desired track/faculty advisor in their statement. You may view the tracks HERE. It is also encouraged that applicants arrange for a telephone or personal interview with the graduate faculty prior to admission to assure compatibility of interests. You can view the research interests of the Department faculty at www.health.utah.edu/healthpromotion/.
- Reference Letters (3): You will need to send three reference letters from professors or colleagues who know your ability to succeed in this department. Please have the three academic or professional letters of reference sent to the Department on letterhead from the reference. We would prefer that at least one of the letters should be from a course instructor. If you completed your B.A. years ago, then professional letters are accepted. The Department mailing address is:

Apply Early
When the file is complete, the Graduate School will forward the application with transcripts to the Department of Health Promotion and Education. This process may take four to six weeks before the department even gets your file to review.
The Graduate School has a tracking system on their website so you can see the status of your application. Incomplete files are the ones that get sidetracked and can take 6 weeks. So apply 1.5 months prior to our departmental review deadline especially if you are a foreign student where checking transcripts and visa status can take more time.
Department Application Review Committee Meets Weekly
