How does online education work?

The Center for Emergency Programs at the University of Utah understands your need for a convenient, cost-effective way to pursue Continuing Medical Education in an often over-scheduled life. What we have to offer makes it possible for you to receive educational materials via the Internet and to partake in that educational setting at your own pace, making notes as you go. There are no time limits except your own! You can easily harness this power at a click of a button. Chat rooms, bulletin boards, and e-mail facilitate student to student and even student to instructor communication.

Step 1. Register for the class
After you have selected the class or classes you want to take, register online. You will be given a username and password for each class you register for. Print the page for your future reference.

Step 2. Pay for the class
For your convenience, we now have encrypted, secure online credit card payment for online classes. After you register, you will be prompted for your payment. If you choose not to pay for the class immediately online, there are other options including telephone and fax. Please note that you can continue with the class, but will not receive credit until payment has been made.

Step 3. Sign on to the class
After you register and receive your User ID and Password, you will be linked back to the Student Home Page. Follow the links listed under "Enter Class/Take Quiz" to login to the desired class, and proceed through the lessons. You can finish in one setting, or you can leave and resume your class later. Bookmark the "Student home page" so you can quickly link into your classes in progress.

Step 4. Take the Quiz
Once you have learned the material contained within, you will see a "Quiz Me Now" option. You will then be directed to the testing section, where you will be given a ten question, multiple-choice exam. Each exam is randomly generated from a bank of possible questions and answers so if these exams are being taken by an EMS organization you will get the benefit of a different exam each time. Select the answers you think are correct and save those answers. Then, when you are ready, click on the "Submit Test" button at the bottom of the exam page and our computer will calculate your results on the spot. You may then choose to review your exam for any errors made.

You may ONLY take the exam TWICE and MUST receive a score above 70% in order to get CME's for the course. Should you fail the first exam, you will given the opportunity to review the material ONE additional time and when ready, you will be given a second exam (this will NOT be the same exam) for grading.

A summary of the Modules you have completed will be maintained at the University of Utah's computer system and will be availabe to you for up to one year. A back-up of your exam will also be kept in our databases so you need not worry about it ever being lost.

Step 5. Get your Certificate
After completing the course, you will have the option of receiving your Certificate of Completion by regular mail or via Internet -- your preference. This Certificate can also be viewed, printed or downloaded from any computer in the world with Internet access. Should your Training Officer want to see that Certificate, you can access the course and do so for up to one year from the time you've taken it!
