Scholarships

Barbara Hillman West

The wish of Dr. West is to have the scholarship that bears her name reflect her professional and personal values.  The following criteria will be considered most important in the selection of the successful candidates:

  • Be a current ESS major of junior or senior level - completed minimum of 60 semester hours.

  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.Demonstrate commitment to an active lifestyle.

  • Demonstrate commitment to his/her chosen profession.

  • There is an indication of need for financial assistance.

To apply for this award, a student should submit:

  • A completed scholarship application form.

  • A current transcript.

  • Two letters of recommendation (no more than one from an ESS faculty member).

This scholarship is offered to entering freshmen, continuing and transfer students and is a tuition waiver for one year (two full-time semesters).   Students who have received the award before are eligible to re-apply.

Application Requirements:

  • Be a Utah resident.

  • Be admitted as a matriculated (degree-seeking) student.

  • Be a freshman, transfer or continuing student who has declared a major in Exercise & Sport Science.

  • Have at least a 3.5 GPA.

To apply for this award, a student should submit:

  • An academic transcript from all colleges attended, if you are a college student. If you are an entering freshman, include your current high school transcript and ACT or SAT scores.

  • Departmental Scholarship Application Form.

  • Three letters of recommendation.

Marvin G. and Barbara Hess

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science invites applications for the Marvin G. and Barbara Hess Scholarship. Mr. Hess was an athlete here at the University of Utah and also coached wrestling for a number of years. As a member of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science for over 40 years, Mr. Hess was a beloved teacher and mentor. The wish of Marvin and Barbara is to have the scholarship that bears their names reflect their life-long interest in supporting student athletes. The following criteria will be considered most important in the selection of the successful candidates:

Application Requirements:

  • Be a current ESS major of sophomore, junior, or senior status - completed a minimum of 30 semester hours.

  • Be an eligible student-athlete on a University of Utah athletic team.

  • There is an indication of need for financial assistance.

Izetta N. Bennion Memorial

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science invites applications for the Izetta N. Bennion Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship was initiated by Glenn N. Taylor, Ph.D. in honor of his aunt, Izetta N. Bennion. Ms. Bennion taught public school physical education and supervised many student teachers. As a tribute to his aunt, Dr. Taylor established this scholarship for the benefit of an Exercise and Sport Science PETE student involved in student teaching. In addition to the priority consideration given to women physical education students teachers, the following criteria will be considered in the selection of the successful candidates:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.

  • Demonstrate commitment to an active lifestyle.

  • Demonstrate commitment to teaching physical education.

  • There is an indication of need for financial assistance.

Edward J. and Margaret Eisenman Memorial

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science invites applications for the Edward J & Margaret Eisenman Memorial Scholarship. Dr. Patricia Eisenman initiated this scholarship fund in memory of her parents. Throughout their lives they supported the educational efforts of many and this scholarship is Dr. Eisenman's contribution to this legacy of giving. The wish of Dr. Eisenman is to have the scholarship that bears her parents' name, provide support for deserving students who are in need of financial assistance and have demonstrated commitment to becoming exercise and sport science professionals. Priority consideration will be given to minority students and/or first generation college students. The following criteria will be considered most important in the selection of the successful candidates:

Application Requirements:

  • Be a current ESS major of junior, or senior status - completed a minimum of 60 semester hours.

  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00.

  • There is an indication of need for financial assistance

  • Demonstrate commitment to an active lifestyle.

  • Demonstrate commitment to being a practicing ESS professional.

To apply for this award, a student should submit:

  • Cover letter speaking to the scholarship priority factors (professional goals, minority and/or 1st generation college student status, financial status).

  • A complete scholarship application form

  • Current transcript.

  • Two letters of recommendation (one must be from an ESS faculty member).

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science invites applications for the Janet Thurgood Scholarship. Ms. Thurgood was a longtime member of the Department of Exercise and Sport Science. She was a beloved teacher and mentor. The wish of Ms. Thurgood is to have the scholarship that bears her name reflect her professional and personal values.
