Department of Exercise and Sport Science

ESS Honors Program

The Department of Exercise and Sport Science Honors Program provides an opportunity for students to integrate research experiences, small interactive classes, and very personalized interactions with Exercise and Sport Science faculty into their undergraduate experience. The ESS Honors Program is intended to provide maximum access to transfer students and over 500 majors. This program fulfills the requirements set for by the University Honor Board.

Honors Certificate

The Honors Certificate is the first step in achieving the Honors Degree and establishes an education foundation in the ESS Honors Program. Students must maintain a 3.4 GPA and complete the following five Honors courses to fulfill the requirements for the Honors Certificate:
•    Two semesters of Honors Core Intellectual Traditions
•    One semester of Honors Writing (HONORS 2211 or HONORS 3200)
•    Two of the following ESS Honors courses:
          ESS 2601 – Honors Sport and American Society (Available Spring Only)
          ESS 3094 – Honors Exercise Physiology (Available Fall and Spring)
          ESS 3096 – Honors Biomechanics (Available Spring Only)
          ESS 3341 – Honors Sport Psychology (Available Fall Only)

Honors Degree

The Honors Degree represents the culmination of challenging coursework and a research experience. Students wishing to earn an Honors Degree in ESS must maintain a 3.4 GPA, complete the requirements for the Honors Certificate, and complete an Honor’s thesis. Student will also need to complete an additional six Honors credit hours. For an ESS Honors Degree, student will need to complete the following:
•    Two semesters of Honors Core Intellectual Traditions
•    One semester of Honors Writing (HONORS 2211 or HONORS 3200)
•    Research and Thesis project (ESS 4999 – Honors Thesis/Project). The Honors thesis includes a presentation of the thesis at the Undergraduate Research Symposium.
•    Two of the following ESS Honors courses:
        ESS 2601 – Honors Sport and American Society (Available Spring Only)
        ESS 3094 – Honors Exercise Physiology (Available Fall and Spring)
        ESS 3096 – Honors Biomechanics (Available Spring Only)
        ESS 3341 – Honors Sport Psychology (Available Fall Only)
