The Department of Exercise and Sport Science has a rich tradition of preparing knowledgeable, caring professionals. The focus of the undergraduate program is on examining and understanding the phenomena associated with the involvement in physical activity and the execution of sport skills. By better understanding these phenomena, teachers, coaches, athletic trainers, and fitness leaders will be able to help optimize sport skill learning experiences for children and adults, administer safe and effective fitness programs, enhance the performance potential of athletes, adopt and modify physical activity for individuals with special needs, and promote physical activity in the community. The ultimate goal of the course work is to foster a better understanding of movement, educate professionals skilled in practical application of the sport and exercise sciences, and promote an active lifestyle through courses in pedagogy, kinesiology, biomechanics, exercise physiology, motor behavior, nutrition, and exercise/sport psychology.
As the advisor for the Exercise and Sport Science Department, I am your link to your understanding the requirements of the major and the University of Utah. The U has advising outside your major, which I encourage you to seek out. Anytime you have questions, you can contact the individual departments for minors, other majors, or graduate programs. I am more than happy to help you actively seek out the resources on campus that can answer your questions if I am unable.
There are five programs available to students wishing to graduate with a bachelor of science in the Department of Exercise and Sport Science: 1) Exercise Science, 2) Exercise Physiology, 3) Fitness Leadership, 4) Physical Education Teaching, and 5) Athletic Training Education. The department also offers a coaching minor available only to those students in the education major. Please use the program requiremenets section of this Web site for more information on the different programs.
As your advisor, I encourage all students to become active in the department. On this site, you will find resources such as SAC or research opportunities to become an active student in the department.
I am here to help. Please call me or the ESS main office (801-581-7558) to make an appointment or email me with questions.
