Financial Assistance

Graduate Assistantships:  General Information

  • Approximately 40-60% of graduate students in ESS receive funding
  • In most cases, graduate student funding also includes partial to full waiver of graduate tuition
  • Minimum stipends required for partial or full tuition waiver change regularly (see below)
  • Classification of graduate students who receive funding include:
    • TA, teaching assistants, teaching must be part of the student’s responsibility
    • RA, research assistants, must be paid from an external research grant account
    • GA, graduate assistants, paid by a department but not by an external research grant account, no teaching involved
    • GF, graduate fellows, paid by fellowship that does not cover tuition
  • TAs and RAs receiving a full tuition waiver are eligible for the Graduate School’s subsidized health insurance policy (see below)

Tuition Benefit Program (TBP)

  • All students receiving a tuition waiver of any sort must be familiar with the TBP guidelines (http://web.utah.edu/graduate_school/tbpguidelines.html)
  • All students on the TBP must sign paperwork in the ESS office at the beginning of each semester!!
  • All students on the TBP must register for a minimum of 9-12 credit hours each fall and spring semester
    • TAs, GAs and GFs are recommended to register for 12 credit hours
      • TAs, GAs, and GFs are not supported on the TBP in summer semester
      • TAs, Gas, and GFs who register for more than 12 credit hours will have to pay for the additional tuition
    • RAs may register for up to 11 credit hours per semester
      • RAs who register for more than 11 credit hours will have to pay for the additional tuition
      • In some cases, RAs may receive TBP support in summer semester for 3 credit hours
  • All students on the TBP must pay special fees (such as lab and course fees)
  • The TBP only covers graduate-level coursework
  • A 3.0 GPA must be maintained by all students on the TBP


Graduate Student Health Insurance

  • All TAs and RAs receiving a full waiver of tuition may choose to receive the subsidized health insurance
  • Eligible students must accept or decline the subsidized health insurance policy by completing the declaration form at the beginning of each fall and spring semester

  • GAs and GFs are not eligible for the subsidized health insurance policy, but may still pay for the policy in full
  • TAs and RAs who do not receive a full tuition waiver are not eligible for the subsidized health insurance policy, but may still pay for the policy in full  

Graduate Teaching Assistantship Application Form

  • Those wishing to be considered for TA positions must complete the TA Application Form
    • The MS Word form must be downloaded first

  • TA positions may include activity/fitness courses, some online courses, laboratory sections, assisting faculty with courses
  • Some TA opportunities require completion of the College Teaching series
  • Deadline for completing the TA Application Form is Feb. 1
  • International students must be cleared through the International Teaching Assistant program (http://web.utah.edu/graduate_school/ita.html)  

PEAK Academy Assistantship Application Form 

  • Those wishing to be considered for PEAK TA positions must complete the PEAK Assistantship Form
    • The MS Word form must be downloaded first

  • The PEAK Assistantships are specialized TA positions
  • These positions are generally awarded to students in Exercise Physiology
    • Applicants for this position must have skills in teaching fitness-related topics and in conducting fitness testing
    • Activities may involve fitness testing, teaching faculty and staff fitness courses, and conducting biometric testing
    • Deadline for completing the PEAK Academy Assistantship Application Form is Feb. 1

Graduate Student Athletic Trainer Application Form

  • Those wishing to be considered for Graduate Student Athletic Trainer positions must complete the Athletic Training Assistantship Form
    • The MS Word form must be downloaded first

  • Graduate student athletic trainers may assist with teaching in the undergraduate athletic training education program curriculum, keep regular hours in the training room, and work/travel with a specific athletic team
  • Applicants must be eligible for NATA-BOC certification and Utah State Licensure
  • Deadline for completing the Graduate Student Athletic Trainer Application Form is Feb. 1

Scholarships and Other Funding for Current Graduate Students

Other funding opportunities include:

  • Research Assistantships
    • RA opportunities may be awarded by individual faculty members with research funding
  • Alice Oakes Bronson Fellowships
    • The primary GF award is available only to doctoral students in Sport Pedagogy
    • A secondary GF award is available to any ESS doctoral student as a research fellowship, only when funds are available
    • Bronson Fellowships are only available to continuing students
    • Recipients may only receive funding from the Bronson mechanism for one year
  • N.P. Neilsen Scholarship
    • Awarded to a doctoral student to continue his or her pursuit of academic excellence
  • R.O. Ruhling Scholarship

Awarded to a master’s student to continue his or her pursuit of academic excellence
