Staff

The Intensive Stuttering Clinics (ISC) are directed by Michael Blomgren, Ph.D., CCC-SLP. Dr. Blomgren is a licensed speech-language pathologist and a research scientist. Dr. Blomgren has worked with hundreds of individuals who stutter. He has numerous professional publications and many national and international presentations on speech motor control and stuttering. The ISC is supported by our certified clinical supervisors and graduate students in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Philosophy

Stuttering is a multidimensional disorder that demands a multidimensional treatment approach. At its core, stuttering is a disorder of speech motor control. But the disorder of stuttering is more than just the stuttering; it also involves a lifetime of dealing with the anxiety and avoidances caused by the stuttering. The ISC targets both improved speech production and stuttering management.  The goals of the the Intensive Stuttering Clinic are:

  • Learn new speaking skills that facilitate fluent speech

  • Reduce number and severity of stuttering moments

  • Foster a proactive attitude toward improving speech production

  • Practice learned techniques in real-life situations

  • Foster a good understanding and healthy acceptance of stuttering

  • Manage stress and anxiety related to stuttering and speaking

  • Increase self-confidence

Treatment Structure

  • The clinics are held on the beautiful mountainside campus of the The University of Utah in Salt Lake City. A multitude of additional recreation and sightseeing opportunities exist.

  • The Intensive Stuttering Clinic involves approximately 70 hours of direct treatment. Therapy is typically conducted between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, and between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturdays. Therapy includes a combination of individual and group sessions.

  • Follow-up “refresher” clinics are offered monthly throughout the year. There is no cost for these follow-up clinics for the first year following the intensive program.

Costs

  • $1500 for the 2-week clinic and follow-up sessions for two-years. A $200 deposit is required upon registration. Program fee includes 70 hours of treatment, program manual, home practice CDs, analog stopwatch, and all other supporting treatment materials.
