You should know your field and the leading researchers in it. You thorough literature citations will indicate you have done your homework. Your list need not be exhaustive, but it should contain seminal studies as well as the most relevant current work.

You may want to use an application to help you make your citations correct. You must list names of authors, name of source, volume and page numbers and the year of the publication.
